Bipolar disorder affects more than 10.4 million Americans. The lows are known as the depressive phase. The depressive phase is called Bipolar Depression. People with Bipolar disorder spend ⅓ of their lives in the depressive phase. Patients with bipolar depression spend the remaining ⅔ in the manic phases. Latuda for bipolar depression is an antidepressant recently approved for the treatment of adults.
Latuda has recently been approved as a course of treatment for adults with Bipolar Depression. Latuda has been known to work faster, sometimes within hours. Latuda, unlike many other antipsychotics, has milder side effects such as restlessness. Latuda should be taken within 30 minutes of food. Latuda for bipolar depression does have a weight gain side effect for some patients.
Latuda is not intended for the elderly and they should be monitored closely when starting this medication. Latuda has an increased mortality rate in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis. Latuda also has an increased mortality in elderly patients with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis (having lost touch with reality; confused; memory loss) have a higher death rate when treated with latuda. Latuda is not approved for treating these patients.
Latuda for bipolar depression is also not intended for young adults, teenagers, and children. Antidepressants, and antipsychotics can increase thoughts and behaviors of suicide in children, teenagers, and young adults. Latuda is not recommended for anyone under the age of 18. Latuda has best results in adults over 21. Call your doctor if you experience any of the following:
Changes in pulse, heart rate, blood pressure
Muscle pain and weakness
Any movements you cannot control in your face, tongue, or other body parts as this can be the signs of TD (Tardive Dyskinesia)
Other side effects of Latuda include:
Increased risks of seizure
Inability to control motor skills, judgement, and reaction time; You should not operate heavy machinery if you are taking this medication.
You may have difficulty cooling off, and experience many warm sensations.
Latuda is not for everyone, but if you are a healthy adult over the age of 21 Latuda may be right for you. The most common side effects in bipolar depressive adults are an inner sense of restlessness and need to move around, difficulty moving, and slow moving. Also you may experience muscle stiffness, tremors, and sleepiness. Call your doctor if you experience anything out of the ordinary while using Latuda.
