Brain Stimulation Device Approved for Parkinson’s Disease

There is good news for those who are suffering from Parkinson’s disease. The FDA has approved a device that can be placed in the brain in order to help those who are dealing with this disease. It is known as the Brio Neurostimulation System and it is an implant that will be placed into the brain in order to add stimulation to reduce any symptoms that can come with Parkinson’s.

The agency is estimating that many of the 50,000 Americans who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease will be able to benefit from this new brain stimulation device. While there are currently no cures available to help out with this disease, this is a step in the right direction to help manage the symptoms that come along with it.

It can add to the treatment options that are available, which makes this disorder easier to deal with and can even slow down the progression.

So what is this device? It is a small pulse generator that is going to be placed under the skin. The wire is going to lead to different brain locations, specifically tailored to the patient being treated to help with Parkinson’s disease. There have been two trials that have shown a lot of promise with this method of treatment. The first one followed 136 patients with this disease for a period of three months and the other followed 127 patients with Parkinson’s disease for a period of six months. In both studies, the patients had tried medication which was not successful.

In both groups, there was a huge improvement in the primary effectiveness when this device was on, especially compared to the times when the device would be turned off. The best part is this device has not shown any risks to those who use it, which can be a great thing for those who are looking to see some relief of their symptoms.

This seems like great news so far with patients who have been dealing with this disease for a long time. It has been tested on just a small group of participants so far, but it has seen tremendous support from the community and the fact that it has been approved by the FDA means that many of those with Parkinson’s disease may finally be able to get the relief they need when other options, such as medication, are not working.
