According to research, Spironolactone may be useful for treating herpes viruses.
The study has shown that consumption of the drug resulted in infections caused by the Epstein Barr Virus (EBS) being blocked. As you would know, EBS is one form of herpes and it can cause a number of health problems, including a range of cancers as well as mononucleosis. The effects of the drug for treating herpes are so far limited to this one form but it is being speculated that it may prove effective for dealing with other forms as well. The reason Spironolactone is unique in this regard is it targets a single protein, SM, which plays a major role in development of the infection which leads to herpes viruses. By inhibiting that protein to a large extent, the drug reduces the risk of herpes for the patient significantly. On the other hand, the medicine currently used for treating the viruses works to keep it from replicating DNA, after which it becomes virtually unstoppable. But that comes at a later stage, whereas Spironolactone starts treating herpes as soon as the risk arises.
